High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Muscatine County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In 2000, the population was 41,722. A 2008 estimate shows a slight increase to 42,405. Its county seat is Muscatine. Muscatine County is part of the Muscatine Micropolitan Statistical Area. Muscatine County was formed on December 7, 1836. One history of the county claims it was named for Muscatine Island in the Mississippi River. The island lies opposite Muscatine County and was allegedly named after the Mascouten native American tribe members who formerly lived there. In 1833, Colonel George Davenport of Illinois sent three representatives into the territory for the purpose of establishing a trade post. These were the first whites to maintain residency here. In the same year, James W. Casey and John Vanatta came to the area. They opened a supply depot for steamships in the area on June 1, 1833, named Caseyu Woodpile. The first public land sale was held in November, 1838. One year later, the construction of the courthouse and a jail was begun.
