Myocardial Contractility in Experimentally induced Diabetes Mellitus
Details
This work was done to show the effect of diabetes mellitus (both type 1 and 2) on different parameters including lipid profile and thyroid hormones as well as to find the relationship between these metabolic changes and myocardial performance. The study included 50 male albino rats, divided into 5 groups: Group I: Normal rats (control). Group II: Streptozotocin induced type 1 diabetic rats. Group III: Fructose induced type 2 diabetic rats. Group IV: Insulin treated type 1 diabetic rats. Group V: Rosiglitazone treated type 2 diabetic rats. At the end of the work, retro-orbital blood samples were extracted and serum glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol and thyroid hormones were measured. Rats were then anesthetized and hearts were excised and connected to Langendorff apparatus were mechanical cardiac performance tests were measured (HR, L.V.D.P and dp/dt). Data showed that, relative to control group there was significant increase in blood glucose, TG and cholesterol levels while, thyroid hormones and myocardial performance parameters showed significant decrease in both type 1 and type 2 diabetic rats. Insulin treatment of type1 was effective.
