Veerpur, a village in the state of India is 'ruled' by a lady called Ammaji. Ammaji being the head of the village and the Gram Panchayat, has made her own rules which are mostly to her benefits (and to the male caste of the village) and disadvantageous to the women of Veerpur. When, the village needs a new doctor, for its ruin-like hospital, Ammaji calls in for a new doctor not for the safety of her 'subjects' but for the sake of all women to have a boy-child. And when Sia, the daughter of the new doctor discovers about the evils of Veerpur, she rebels against the people who encourage such evils; that is, Ammaji.
