Naming and indigenous Names among the Dagbamba

The essay discusses, in brief, the ceremonies of naming (Islam and Traditional) as it is carried out among the Dagbamba of Northern Ghana. This is meant to highlight differences and similarities. A discussion of whether a Muslim can bear an indigenous Ghanaian name and still be a Muslim then follows and finally some selected indigenous names and their meanings are presented in a series of classifications.

Hussein Ibrahim obtained Diploma (1986), Bachelor of Arts Degree (1993), MPHIL (1999) and PhD (2013) all in the Study of Religions. For several years, Dr. Hussein served as the Head of Department of Religious Studies at the Islamic University College, Ghana; where he is currently the Vice President (Academic Affairs).
