Mainly, exposed to adverse climatic circumstances and heavy traffic load, it has become essential to modify our standard asphalt binder. There are various issues that are faced in road construction, out of them cracking is termed as a serious issue for pavement engineering in cold region. Low temperature in winters can stiffen the binder and reduce the flexibility of paved mix, resulting in cracking and other distresses. Modifications are therefore essential to improve asphalt mixture efficiency and to some extent resolve the issue of premature failure. Nanotechnology utilizes the research and technology established at the nuclear and molecular or macromolecular levels to comprehend the nano-scale phenomena. In road constructions, the bituminous materials are used in enormous amounts. The macroscopic mechanical conduct of these materials still largely relies on microstructure and physical characteristics at a micro and nano scale level.

Dr Peerzada Mosir Shah, has completed Ph.D from National Institute of Technology Srinagar. He has finished Ph.D. study which is about using different nanomaterials in asphalt mixture and binders and observing their impact on various rheological and mechanical properties of asphalt binders and mixes.
