Nanostructured Biomedical Coatings: The Materials Perspective
Details
The demand for implants in the areas of orthopaedics, dentistry and maxillofacial surgery has increased over the years due to an insufficient supply of natural bone to satisfy the clinical needs. Conventional metals and alloys are often used as implant materials to confer good mechanical strength. Generally, these biomaterials exhibit relatively poor bonding with the bone tissues. For this reason, there has been significant interest in the development of bioactive coatings on metallic implants to encourage bone apposition. This book, thus, provides a systematic approach to the synthesis and characterization of novel silicon-substituted hydroxyapatite thin coatings, thereby enhancing the speed and quality of bone repair process. The durable medical coating could offer a good alternative to both the plasma-sprayed and hydroxyapatite coatings. This book is essential reading for all students and researchers across the fields of materials science and medical science.
