The National Service Act 1948 was a parliamentary act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom continuing the conscription of World War II into peacetime in the form of National Service. The act was approved in December of 1948 (see below) and came into force the first of January of the following year. The act was a modified version of the National Service Act of September, 1939, which it superseeded, and mainly aimed to address whether National Service would continue after the war. The National Service Act of September, 1939 did not address this issue, thus leaving the Military Training Act of May, 1939 as the ruling law on the issue, which explicitly states that conscription would occur in times of peace.
