Nativelike Performance
Details
This book presents the results of a corpus study of native and non-native communicative performance in speech as realised through pragmatic markers, repair and repetition. The study stresses the importance of investigating not only the general frequency with which these phenomena occur, but also the functions and linguistic environments involved. The results of the study indicate that while the non-native Swedish speakers of English are basically as fluent as the native speakers as regards some of the aspects investigated, there are other aspects in which their production cannot be considered fluent in the sense of representing a nativelike level of communicative performance. This book should be of great value to teachers and learners of English, particularly those who take a special interest in issues relating to fluency in L2 English use.
