Neglected tropical livestock diseases

Leptospirosis is an important but neglected tropical zoonosis causing abortions and mastitis in cattle. the disease agent is harboured by farm animals and pet dogs. vaccination of farm animals and pet dogs will prevent the zoonotic spread to humans. Black quarter is one of the dreadful diseases affecting ruminants, mainly cattle and sheep throughout the world. the disease has been controlled by intense annual vaccination of cattle in the endemic region. This booklet discusses about the etiology, bacteriology, animal hosts, risk factors, diagnosis, control, and prevention of neglected tropical animal diseases like leptospirosis and black quarter.

The author holds a doctorate in Veterinary Bacteriology from ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, India. Major research interests include study of antimicrobial resistance in livestock and poultry pathogens, leptospirosis in animals and humans, bacteriophages against zoonotic/foodborne pathogens, bacterial vaccines.
