NGOs and their Impact on the Status of Women in Nicaragua

Do nongovernmental organizations impact the status of women, and if so, to what extent? NGOs and their Impact on the Status of Women in Nicaragua: 1979-Present uses the testimonies of Nicaraguans intimately connected to the historical and contemporary nongovernmental organization network in Nicaragua to answer these questions. This text explores the questions using both direct field research and archival sources of evidence. This study traces the changes in the status of women from the Nicaraguan Revolution of 1979 to the present day. The study then examines the evolution of nongovernmental organizations deriving from the original group named the Luisa Amanda Espinosa Association of Nicaraguan Women (AMNLAE). Finally, it describes the impact of nongovernmental organizations on policy making and building civil societies. Weeks thorough research and incisive commentary lends a fresh perspective on this important but sometimes overlooked area at the intersection of political science and sociology.
