High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Non-equilibrium thermodynamics is a branch of thermodynamics concerned with systems that are not in thermodynamic equilibrium. Most systems found in nature are not in thermodynamic equilibrium because they are not isolated from their environment and are therefore continuously sharing matter and energy with other systems. This sharing of matter and energy includes being driven by external energy sources as well as dissipating energy. The thermodynamic study of non-equilibrium systems requires more general concepts than are dealt with by equilibrium thermodynamics. Of particular importance for non-equilibrium thermodynamics are the concepts of local thermodynamic equilibrium, time rate of dissipation of energy (Section II of Rayleigh (1873)), and of time rate of entropy production (Onsager 1931). Systems driven out of equilibrium do often exhibit patterned behavior such as fluctuations or phase transitions.
