Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder that is characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep. OSA is a widely prevalent problem with significant medical, psychological, and social consequences. Obstruction may involve awakening under the effect of increased effort and a reduction (hypopnea) or complete cessation (apnea) of airflow in the presence of respiratory movements. Sleep apnea is recognized by a combination of symptoms and laboratory results.
