High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Oda (Turkish: oda, "a room, chamber") is a room within a harem found in the Ottoman Empire. The word oda simply means "a room" in Turkish. The English and French term odalisque also derives from the related Turkish word odal k which means "a chamber girl" or "a concubine". Harem (Turkish, from Arabic aram 'forbidden place; sacrosanct, sanctum', related to ar m 'a sacred inviolable place; female members of the family' and ar m, 'forbidden; sacred') refers to the sphere of women in a usually polygynous household and their quarters which is enclosed and forbidden to men. It originated in the Near East and came to the Western world via the Ottoman Empire.
