"La joueuse de Kora" invites us to admire the beauty of the southern lands, to hear the refrains of deep Africa, to feel the suffering of the oppressed, to make their revolt our own and to wish that the forces of life triumph over the evils of humanity. The discourse of love takes on the magnitude of a metaphor of Africa marked by racial and political violence, but strong of its hopes. "La traversée des mirages" - an initiatory novel of the finest style, an unclassifiable story at the crossroads of the novel of manners, the initiatory tale and social and political criticism, is set in twentieth-century Africa where arbitrariness is rife. It criticizes the tribal ideology in its multiple aspects, from the safeguarding of identity through racial domination to ethnic cleansing. It is also an unexpected love story between a peasant and an honest, courageous and educated woman from the urban bourgeoisie. Throughout the pages, the reader is invited, along with the main character, to lift the loincloth of mirages to better see and understand Africa, which is both beautiful and painful.
