On Shear Locking in Finite Elements

In this monograph, the origin of shear locking was tried to be explained clearly. Factors which might have significant effects on shear locking were analyzed. These factors mainly include interpolation order, integration scheme and selection of variational principle. Later, a general solution, called field consistence approach, was put forward, which was applied in explaining shear locking and in developing highly efficient beam elements. Then, the field consistence approach was used, in an indirect way, in deriving a 3-node triangular and a 4-node quadrilateral plate bending element. Finally, some of the developed shear-flexible elements were extended, with the aid of a co-rotational formulation, to accommodate finite rotation, to check their efficiency in non-linear situations.
Autorentext
Dr. Luo obtained his Licentiate and PhD from the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. After that he worked in Karlsruhe University, Germany and in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA. He joined the University of Manitoba, Canada, in 2006. His research interests include: finite element methods, adaptive algorithms, material modeling, etc.
