In this project, level luff crane hook for the loading capacity of 10 ton with different (trapezoidal, rectangle, circle, triangle) cross sections made of different materials (SAE 970X, AISI 4340, AISI 4130, AISI 5150) with two different radius (150mm and 200mm) are considered. The main objective of this study is to optimize the crane hook using Grey relational analysis. Modeling is done using solid works and analysis is carried out in ANSYS. The stress distribution for each combination are obtained and validated with theoretical results based on Winkler-Bach theory. The numerical results have good agreement with theoretical results. Further, out of these combinations the optimum is decided by using Grey relational analysis.

Muthu Natarajan works as an Assistant Professor at Kamaraj College of Engineering and Technology, Madurai. He has completed UG (Mechanical Engineering) from Park College of Engineerng and Technology, Coimbatore and PG (Engineering Design) from Government college of Engineering. Now he is pursuing Ph.D. from Anna University.
