It is no secret that cloud computing will change the IT/business landscape in an unprecedented manner in the next 5 years. Much of the discussion today has been narrowed down to the cost-saving benefits of cloud computing to business enterprise and public versus private cloud debate. However, the potential of cloud computing from a global perspective is far beyond server consolidation and virtualization. Fundamentally, cloud computing shifts the benefits of the open source movement, fuel business innovation and impact our culture at large in ways that parallel how we have seen Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram up-end the status quo. The need for developing economy to be aware of the implications of combining cloud computing practices with open source initiative cannot be over-emphasized. Open source access act as a basis for innovation, free of license restriction, enabling motivated users to customize solutions for context-specific needs, these will ensure an efficient use of existing code base and meet the requirement for developing nations that struggle with limited resources to tackle similar challenges. Cloud computing bridges both digital and economic divides.
