ORAL HEALTH CARE FOR REFUGEES

Refugees are a highly vulnerable population, and many having experienced physical and psychological trauma because of war, traumatic injuries, sexual violence, and gender-based violence. Refugees can be from countries ridden with conflict, poverty or climate change and undertake dangerous journeys to reach a place of relative safety. By having a stronger understanding of the key causes of oral health issues among refugees and asylees in the dental providers can better approach managing care for this vulnerable patient population. The concepts of desensitization and fear reduction utilized for this special population can be applied to managing care for the wider special needs patient community.
