Oscar Woolverton Griswold was born on 22 October 1886 in Ruby Valley Nevada. He attended the University of Nevada, Reno from 1905 to 1906, when he received an appointment to the United States Military Academy. On graduation with the West Point Class of 1910, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry.Griswold''s West Point jacket was later sold in a West Point auction,and by 2009 was later resold to the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas owned by Rick Harrison. The selling of this jacket was featured on an episode of Pawn Stars, which features the day to day life of the managers and employees at the shop.
