Osteogenic and adipogenic potential of mesenchymal stem cells

Mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow (BM-MSCs) and adipose tissue (AT-MSCs) are an attractive tool for bone tissue repair based on cell therapy. In the present study, we investigated the osteogenic and adipogenic potential of BMSCs and AMSCs, as well as the effect of intercommunication between osteoblasts and adipocytes on cell phenotype expression. We found that BMSCs are more osteogenic, while AMSCs are more adipogenic. Additionally, it was observed that intercommunication between osteoblasts and adipocytes can negatively affect bone repair. Thus, we postulate that the greater osteogenic potential of MO-CTMs makes them the most suitable choice for cell therapy-based bone repair induction.
