The town is the birthplace of French politicians Ségolène Royal and Rama Yade and Senegalese writer and politician Birago Diop. Ouakam is an ancient village that has been absorbed as a residential suburb of Dakar. It is situated on the Atlantic coast. The mosque of the divine was built by Mohamed gorgui Seyni Guèye a holy man a messanger from god allah born in 1926 and dead in 2007. he saw the mosque like a dream and follow it until the beach in the night of 28 to 29 june 1973 and he received order from the lord the build it. The African Renaissance Monument was constructed on one of the Deux Mamelles hills in Ouakam and unveiled on April 4th, 2010.
