Participatory GIS for Native Root Gathering Preservation
Details
This work outlines the multifaceted approach using participant-observation and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to develop a working model to assist the Confederated Tribes and Band of Yakama Nation, a federally-recognized Tribe and the Wanapum, a non-federally-recognized Tribe to continue the practice of root gathering on U.S. Army Garrison, Yakima Training Center. This approach allows a significant cultural practice to occur in conjunction with military training.
