A party platform, also known as a manifesto, is a list of the actions which a political party supports in order to appeal to the general public for the purpose of having said party''s candidates voted into office. This often takes the form of a list of support for, or opposition to, controversial topics. Individual topics are often called planks of the platform. A manifesto is a public declaration of principles and intentions, often political in nature. However, manifestos relating to religious belief are generally referred to as a creed. Manifestos may also be life stance-related. Manifesto is derived from the Italian word manifesto, itself derived from the Latin manifestum, meaning clear or conspicuous. Its first recorded use in English is from 1620, in Nathaniel Brent''s translation of Paolo Sarpi''s History of the council of Trent: "To this citation he made answer by a Manifesto". Similarly, "They were so farre surprized with his Manifesto, that they would never suffer it to be published".
