Peninsular Spanish, also known as European Spanish, refers to the varieties of the Spanish language spoken in the Iberian Peninsula, as opposed to the Spanish spoken in the Americas, Philippines and Africa known as American Spanish, Philippine Spanish and African Spanish, respectively. In phonology, the most prominent distinguishing element of (northern and central) Peninsular Spanish is the preservation of a distinction between the phonemes /s/ and / / (called distinción in Spanish), corresponding respectively to the letters s on one hand and z or "soft" c on the other. "Soft" c refers to the fricative sound represented by the letter c before either of the vowels e or i . ("Soft" c and z are pronounced the same in any dialect of Spanish.)
