People with intellectual disabilities and their parents' home

Cutting the cord with one's parents - a completely normal process that everyone goes through sooner or later. Does this also apply to young people with intellectual disabilities? What do parents experience in the run-up to this separation? What does the disabled young person have to deal with? Can they manage this alone? And is moving out a sign that the separation has been successful? In a pluralistic, individualised society, growing up is a difficult developmental task for all young people. For people with intellectual disabilities in particular, the process of separating from their parents is a major challenge. This book deals with the possibilities and limitations of this process. It highlights the role of the mother in the family system and describes the stages of coping that are gone through when a mentally disabled child is part of the family. The book is aimed at families with disabled relatives, professionals who advise, support or care for disabled people or their families, and anyone interested in this topic.

Corinna Steinberg-Masztalerz, paediatric nurse and special needs teacher, provided long-term care for mentally disabled adults in a residential facility. After completing her studies in social work/social pedagogy (B.A.) at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, she worked in a therapeutic residential group for people with mental illness.
