Performative Resistance to Female Genital Cutting in West Africa

Female genital cutting (FGC) is a traditional and cultural-based practice conducted with some frequency throughout Africa upon young girls generally between the ages of 4 and 12 years. In this analysis of West African women's methods of opposition to FGC, complex themes are examined, including international non-governmental organizations, economic and social development policies, post-colonial literature, and ongoing gender negotiation.
