Performance appraisal is a formal management system that provides for the evaluation of the quality of an individual's performance in an organization. A few decades ago, the appraisals of an individual's performance in an employment setting were known as merit ranking, employee evaluation, service record of rating, character role, employee evaluation, performance audit etc. which were used to evaluate the performance of an employee based on the assigned tasks set by the organization.
