Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Risk Management

Pharmaceutical supply chain should provide medicines in the right quantity with the acceptable quality to the right place and customers at the right time and with the optimum cost. Any risk affecting the pharmaceutical supply chain not only wastes resources but also threaten the patient life by hindering access to medicines. The pharmaceutical fund and supply agency /PFSA/ was established by the government of Ethiopia back in 2007 with the objectives of addressing the issue of drug availability and affordability. The agency is responsible to meet 82% of the country's demand for pharmaceutical supplies. But it is not unusual to encounter shortage and unavailability of medicines and medical supplies in governmental health facilities, which ought to be primary supplied by PFSA. This book tried to investigate supply chain risk management practices and main supply chain risks faced by PFSA. Academicians as well as stakeholders in the pharmaceutical supply chain can benefit from this book. It can also serve as a spring board for future researches in addressing issues of pharmaceutical supply chain risks in developing countries.

Bisrat Mengistu, MA, BPharm, is a pharmacist as well as a supply chain and logistics professional. He earned both degrees from Addis Ababa University.
