Pharmacognostical Study and Antipsychotic Activity

Ayurvedic medicines have been used for mental disorders in Indian since 1000 BC. Schizophrenia (Unmaad), a mental disease leading to disorganized personality of the patient, can be treated with Ayurvedic medicines. The treatment includes both internal and external administration of medicines. It is both palliative and curative in nature.. Several medicines and therapies are found to be effective for the treatment of psychosis.Ayurvedic approach of curing the schizophrenia is that it revives natural healing ability of our body, while leaving no side effects. Citrus species has been mentioned in earlier text as a diuretic, astringent, febrifuge, gingivitis, stomatitis, inflammation of the tongue, laxative and cold .In the light of these observations, it was interest in the present study to focus on the pharmacognostical evaluation(standardization ) of Citrus limon is used in the treatment of psychopath, but detailed scientific studies regarding antipsychotic activity has not been reported. The present work has been taken up to investigate the antipsychotic activity from the leaves of Citrus limon Linn.
