Pharmacokinetics and tissue residue study of drugs in poultry
Details
The purpose of studying pharmacokinetics of any drug is to establish its suitable dosage regimens in the particular species of interest. About 15% of the therapeutically active substances used in veterinary medicine are administered to birds but there is very limited scientific information available on avian pharmacotherapy. Today microbial resistant and adverse effect of these drugs is on rise and the consequent effect of drugs on the environment, the food chain and human health could be vast. To avoid drug resistance and to ensure consumer protection, the European Union has banned and/or limited the use of certain drugs, by establishing maximum residue limits (MRL) allowed in various tissues from animals intended for human consumption and has adopted measures to monitor the levels of these substances. For animal health drugs, information on bioavailability as well as excretion, distribution, and depletion from edible tissues is needed when their utility is assessed.
