Phonetics in Europe

This volume comprehends articles focussing on phonetic aspects of languages and language varieties spoken in present-day Europe. The standard languages of the largest language families, Germanic, Slavic and Romance, are represented as well as minority languages such as Frisian and Finno-Ugric languages, dialects and regiolects.

Charlotte Gooskens is Associate Professor of European Linguistics at the Center for Language and Cognition at the University of Groningen. Her research interests include sociophonetics, linguistic distance measurements, receptive multilingualism and experimental linguistics. She is currently principal investigator of the project Mutual intelligibility of closely related languages in Europe: linguistic and non-linguistic determinants. Renée van Bezooijen is involved in the project Mutual intelligibility of closely related languages in Europe: linguistic and non-linguistic determinants as a general adviser. She used to be active in the fields of vocal aspects of emotion, vocal impressions of personality, dialectology and sociophonetics.
