Pinchas Zukerman (Hebrew: , born July 16, 1948) is a noted Israeli violin master, violist, and conductor who was appointed Music Director of Ottawa's National Arts Centre Orchestra in April 1998. Zukerman was born in Tel Aviv, to Yehuda and Miriam Lieberman Zukerman. He left for the United States and studied at the Juilliard School. He made his New York début in 1963. He won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1966. From 1980 to 1987 he was the director of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in Minnesota. In one interview, Mr. Zukerman revealed that he has played in orchestras before, rather than with them. For example, he has said that he's sat in the back of the first violin section of the Chicago Symphony and played along with them in a performance of Gustav Mahler's first symphony.
