Private Tuition Phenomenon In Mathematics In Greater Amman-Jordan
Details
The phenomenon of private tuition in Mathematics is spreading widely in Amman, Jordan. I firstly studied the nature of the phenomenon of private tuition in Mathematics in the Greater Amman area and secondly, the scope and impact of private tuition in Mathematics at the Amman Baccalaureate School. The research was conducted in the form of two major studies. Both studies used questionnaires, interviews and academic records from schools. In Study one, 32 schools in Greater Amman representing government, private and United Nations for Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) schools in Classes 8, 10 and 12, revealed the nature and scope of private tuition. The study also revealed that most of the private school students were tutored mainly by private tutors, while government school students and UNRWA students were tutored mainly by parents/family members and tuition centers, with the highest tuition happening in Mathematics compared with other subjects. In Study two, the relationship between private tuition and academic achievement in Mathematics was studied in the Amman Baccalaureate School. Private tuition did not have a significant impact on achievement.
