Probiotics : A Paradigm shift in periodontics

Probiotics represent a promising adjunct in periodontal therapy due to their ability to modulate the oral microbiome, inhibit pathogenic bacteria, reduce inflammation, and enhance host immune response. Current evidence suggests that probiotic supplementation, when combined with conventional periodontal treatment, may improve clinical outcomes such as reduced pocket depth and improved attachment levels. However, variations in probiotic strains, dosage, and delivery methods highlight the need for standardized protocols and long-term clinical trials. With growing emphasis on biologically based therapies, probiotics hold significant potential as a safe and effective supportive strategy in the prevention and management of periodontal diseases.
