Details

This book brings together the peer-reviewed extended papers from the Third National Conference on Wind Engineering (3NCWE), held in Bucharest, Romania, on September 1113, 2024. The conference was jointly organized by the Romanian Association for Wind Engineering (ARIV), the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (UTCB), and the Faculty of Geography, University of Bucharest, and welcomed participants from ten countries across four continents.

The contributions showcase the diverse directions of current research in wind engineering, spanning structural response under wind and combined loads, computational and experimental aerodynamics, and atmospheric and coastal meteorology. Topics include wind-induced fatigue in steel structures, torsional flutter energy harvesting, CFD analyses of interference effects on buildings, seismicwind interaction in tall buildings, full-scale damping estimation of towers, and the historical evolution of wind design codes. In addition, several studies examine wind phenomena in the Black Sea basin, such as sea breeze occurrence, storm boundary layer evolution, and comparisons between satellite data and numerical model simulations. This book also features laboratory investigations of velocity distributions in boundary layer wind tunnels, providing valuable experimental insights.

By combining structural engineering, computational modeling, meteorology, wind tunnel testing, and full-scale measurements, this book provides a valuable resource for both researchers and practicing engineers seeking deeper understanding of windstructureatmosphere interactions.

Unites structural engineering, computational and experimental aerodynamics, atmospheric sciences, wind tunnel testing Features latest wind engineering research from Romania alongside with contributions from experts Provides valuable insights for both academics and practicing engineers

Autorentext

Ileana Calotescu is an associate professor at the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (UTCB), Bucharest, Romania. She holds a Ph.D. in wind engineering and is currently a member of the Department of Steel Structures, Management and Engineering Graphics. Her expertise involves both wind and earthquake engineering, having co-authored several scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals in both areas. Dr. Calotescu has coordinated several research projects focusing mainly on thunderstorm winds and their effects on structures. Dr. Calotescu is a founding member of the Romanian Association for Wind Engineering and currently holds the position of president of the association. She is also the current adjoint secretary general of the International Association for Wind Engineering (IAWE).

Costin Ioan Cooiu is an associate professor at the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (UTCB), Bucharest, Romania. He holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and is currently a member of the Department of Hydraulics, Sanitary Engineering and Environmental Protection. He is also the director of the Aerodynamics and Wind Engineering Laboratory Constantin Iamandi (LAIV), the main experimental infrastructure for wind engineering in Romania. His expertise covers wind engineering, turbulence, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and hydraulic machinery, with applications in energy conversion from clean sources. Dr. Cooiu has coordinated four competitively funded research projects and co-authored more than 30 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. He is a founding member of the Romanian Association for Wind Engineering (ARIV) and currently serves as its vice president.
