The aim of this book was to characterize the conditions favorable to the progress of tomato black spot caused by Alternaria solani in Viçosa-MG, Brazil, as well as the effects of the disease on tomato production, genotypes, and cultivation systems in different growing seasons. Control of black spot was most effective in the fall/winter and winter/spring seasons. During these seasons, the onset of the epidemic was delayed by 60 days.

Graduated from the Federal University of Lavras, master's degree in agronomy (Plant Science) from the Federal University of Lavras, doctorate in agronomy (Plant Pathology) from the Federal University of Viçosa, and postdoctoral degree in epidemiology and seed pathology from UFLA. Taught microbiology and plant pathology classes for undergraduate agronomy students.
