Project of MPIANA Pensioners in South Africa and HIV/AIDS

Shorttitle A study of the socio-economic impact of the old age pension in the pensioner household is relevant since it may assist in understanding the care-giving role that pensioners are playing in the life of South African people with their social pension. The research applied an empirical research design. The empirical research design was conducted with pensioners in the selected areas of the Eastern Cape (Bersheba, Bethelsdorp and Kwazakhele). Both qualitative and quantitative methods of research were used to obtain the views of pensioners concerning the socio-economic impact of old age pension in the lives of family members living together with them. A sample of 102 persons was interviewed. The majority of the respondents (90.43%) were looking financially after their households members. Females constituted the largest percentage of respondents (53.54%) and male (46.46%). the care giving role play by pensioners in South Africa requires recognition and financial assistance to pensioner's household members in order to meet expenses.
