Qaasuitsup is a new municipality in Greenland, operational from 1 January 2009. It consists of the former municipalities of western and northern Greenland, each named after the biggest settlement. These include: Kangaatsiaq, Aasiaat, Qasigiannguit, Ilulissat, Qeqertarsuaq, Uummannaq, Upernavik, and Qaanaaq. Its population is 17,867 (as of January 2008). The administrative center of the municipality is in Ilulissat. The main language spoken is Kalaallisut (West Greenlandic), and Inuktun is also spoken in and around Qaanaaq.
