Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. A qedesha (or qedsha) is a temple or sacred prostitute, in several ancient Middle Eastern religions. They are particularly associated with the Goddess Astarte. The male equivalent of a qedesha is a qadesh. Sacred prostitution, temple prostitution, or religious prostitution is a form of sympathetic magic performed as a fertility rite of sexual intercourse as part of religious or sacred worship, usually to a goddess. A person engaged in such practice is called a temple prostitute, hierodule, or temple harlot. The practice was widespread in ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and performed in goddess temples by a priestess. Modern connotations of the term prostitute may not be appropriate, given the religious and cultural signification of the activities. Sacred prostitution was widespread across the Ancient Near East as a form of "Sacred Marriage" or Hieros gamos between the king of a Sumerian city-state and the High Priestess of Inanna, the Sumerian goddess of sexual love, fertility, and warfare.
