The Ancient Egyptian artisan Qen lived in Deir el-Medina on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Thebes, during the reigns of Ramesses II. He was buried in a tomb in the village necropolis. Qen was a son of Thonufer (Chiseller of Amun in the Khenu) and Lady Maetnefert. In the tomb two wives are mentioned: Nefertari and Henutmehyt. Qen''s son Meryre (son of Nefertari) is mentioned in the tomb. His titles included Servant in the Place of Truth, meaning that he work on the excavation and decoration of nearby royal tombs. Ancient Egypt was an ancient civilization of eastern North Africa, concentrated along the lower reaches of the Nile River in what is now the modern country of Egypt. The civilization coalesced around 3150 BC with the political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under the first pharaoh, and it developed over the next three millennia. Its history occurred in a series of stable Kingdoms, separated by periods of relative instability known as Intermediate Periods.
