At 9:45 p.m. on 1 October 1999 the Jersey-registered fishing vessel Rachel Harvey struck rocks 200 yards off Peninnis Head in the Isles of Scilly in stormy seas. St Mary's Lifeboat and a search-and-rescue Sea King helicopter from RNAS Culdrose attended the scene. The lifeboat picked up all six crew, but one man was pronounced dead on arrival at St Mary's Hospital. The Isles of Scilly form an archipelago off the southwestern tip of the Cornish peninsula of Great Britain. Traditionally administered as part of the county of Cornwall, the islands have had a unitary authority council since 1890. This council is currently known as the Council of the Isles of Scilly.
