RADIO'S COVERAGE OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN BENUE OF NIGERIA
Details
This study, "Radio's Coverage of Gender-Based Violence in Benue of Nigeria: The Public's Viewpoint", determined the perception of Radio Benue coverage of gender-based violence in the State. It revealed that listeners are exposed to Radio Benue messages on gender-based violence minimally since the messages come once in a while. Radio Benue messages on gender-based violence cases in Benue State which are also broadcast mostly in the English language are understood by listeners to a large extent. Further findings revealed that Radio Benue messages mostly emphasize the need for victims to speak out. By so doing, the station is performing its education and sensitization function to the listeners on the issue of gender-based violence with its messages. Lastly, it was revealed that Radio Benue messages have helped in addressing issues of gender-based violence as the messages enable some victims to speak out, implying that the messages have been effective. The study recommended, among others, that government should recognize the suitability of the radio as a communication medium in championing campaigns on such anti-social behaviour.
