Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. RadioAstron is a planned space radio telescope. It is funded by the Russian Space Research Institute, and is expected to be launched into Earth orbit in August 2010, with a perigee of 10,000 km and an apogee of 390,000 km. At launch the mass of the spacecraft will be about 5,000 kilograms (11,000 lb). It will be launched by a Zenit-2SB carrier rocket with a Fregat-2CB upper stage. Main scientific goal of the mission is the study of various astronomical objects with unprecedented angular resolution up to few millionth of an arcsecond. A radio telescope is a form of directional radio antenna used in radio astronomy. The same types of antennas are also used in tracking and collecting data from satellites and space probes. In their astronomical role they differ from optical telescopes in that they operate in the radio frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum where they can detect and collect data on radio sources. Radio telescopes are typically large parabolic ("dish") antennas used singly or in an array.
