During the communistic regime he became amateur World Champion twice, but was unable to become a professional cyclist. The money he made during international matches in Belgium and the Netherlands were paid to the Czechoslovakia Cycling Union and im nek did not receive the money he achieved. The fall of the Berlin Wall finally allowed him to become a professional, which resulted in a World title at the 1991 World Championships in Gieten.
