High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! RAF Hawkinge was an airfield in Kent, near to the south coast and the closest airfield to the French coast. It took part in the Battle of Britain and it was home to No. 79 Squadron RAF. The site has been largely built over, but part is occupied by the Kent Battle of Britain Museum. The Battle of Britain (German: Luftschlacht um England) is the name given to the air campaign waged by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) against the United Kingdom during the summer and autumn of 1940. The objective of the campaign was to gain air superiority over the Royal Air Force (RAF), especially Fighter Command. The name derives from a famous speech delivered by Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the House of Commons: "The Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin..."
