High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Ratri, who is often also called Ratridevi is the goddess of night in the Vedas, and the mythology of India and Hinduism. She is sister to Ushas, the Vedic goddess of Dawn. Her name is the common/ordinary word for nighttime in Indian languages like Bengali, Telugu and Kannada. The Vedas (Sanskrit véda, "knowledge") are a large body of texts originating in Ancient India. Composed in Vedic Sanskrit, the texts constitute the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism. Ushas ( ; u as), Sanskrit for "dawn",[1] is a Vedic deity, and consequently a Hindu deity as well. Ushas is an exalted divinity in the Rig Veda, sometimes spoken of in the plural, "the Dawns." She is portrayed as welcoming birds and warding off evil spirits, and as a beautifully adorned young woman riding in a golden chariot on her path across the sky.
