Raya Personal Names: A Sociolingustic Perspective

Names are not a simple depiction of events in a society. Rather, they carry their own purpose in transferring information from generation to generation, from society to society, from family to family with their own purpose. They are tags or labels with a deep and immense thought of a given society. Thus, studying personal names is of a great focus of attention for today's Linguists, Anthropologists, and Sociologists from different angles. From the perspective of Linguistics, we can study names focusing on the social functions of names they serve in the society particularly depending on the topic of language and society, the meaning they carry and their morphological content.

The author is currently a lecturer of English Language and Literature at Woldia University-Ethiopia. He is BA holder in English Language in July, 2011 and MA holder in Linguistics in July, 2013 from Mizan Tepi and Bahir Dar Universities respectively.
