Reaching beyond compliance:The challenges of
achieving campus sustainability examines the
obstacles to integrating principles of sustainability
into the decision-making procedure within an
institution of higher education. Critical insight
into the process of building a sustainable campus is
gained via the examination of the decision-making
process of three critical operational systems within
a university: food services, purchasing and the waste
management system. This study explores why
principles of sustainability are either embraced or
rejected in the decision-making procedures in a
university setting and reaffirms that the
decision-making process is a crucial leverage point
for reform as university strives to become sustainable.
