Recover the Aral: Restoration of a Disappearing Sea through Fisheries

Where there is no vision, the people perish. The persistent pursuit of cotton, fueled by short-sighted economic interests and political power dynamics, has nearly wiped out the Aral Sea and pushed Uzbek nation perilously close to environmental ruin, monoculture dependency, and economic stagnation. The impacts have become more severe with population growth, the need for food security, the shift towards responsible water management and prudent sustainable agricultural development. In response to these hardships, the book focuses on the magnitude of land administration in dry and semi-dry territories, while also advocating for the restoration of fisheries in the Amudarya delta and the construction of a reservoir in the Adzhibay Gulf. However, one has to understand that the primary objective is not limited only to restoring specific areas of the Aral Sea or favoring one economic sector while neglecting others. The main message is to mobilize all national resources, both human and financial, and gradually reform the entire agricultural sector in accordance with the spirit of the times.
