Details

Eero Palmujoki examines the regionalist debate in Southeast Asia from the end of the Cold War up to the beginning of the new millennium. He focuses on the organization of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and covers the political, economic and security issues characterizing its development. The book compares the theoretical debate with political developments in the region, from the beginning of the post-Cold War period with its rapid economic growth through the Asian economic crisis of 1997 and the resulting restructuring of Southeast-Asian regional systems.

"Outstanding. A major work of synthesis that demonstrates the inextricable linkages between globalisation and regionalism in the political economy of East Asia." - Richard Higgott, Editor, Pacific Review"Rich, nuanced and chock full of fresh insights, this will be must-reading about Asia. Beeson distils the region's unfolding political economy and security challenges in a most readable and digestible form." - T. J. Pempel, University of California, Berkeley"Mark Beeson's depth of knowledge of both individual countries andregional developments shines through in this excellent and muchneeded text." - Richard Stubbs,McMaster University"We have long needed a text that covers both political economy and security issues in East Asia. Mark Beeson's new book admirably fills this gap." - John Ravenhill, Australian National University
